It's been quite a long time since I called in sick to work, and I just felt today was the day. So I called in. I do have a bit of a runny nose and scratchy throat, so I don't feel like I "lied" about it. But I probably could've gone in. On the other hand, it has been snowing here for the last two days and I am just tired of trying to get to work through the snow flakes and raindrops. So home is where I'll be.
I don't know when it happened, but somehow technology has passed me by. Girls at work and even my family members have all those "new fangled" iphones and such that you can check emails on, even surf the web - I still have on old fashioned "flip phone" - I don't even know how to text messages on it. I use it for phone calls only. I don't feel like I'm that OLD - I was on the bottom floor way before people had their own personal computers and all that. The company I worked for actually started installing "mini computers" at our clients' offices, and I was the one who had to get them all set up on them- I think that was probably a mistake, not that the clients wouldn't have gotten their own computers ANYway, eventually, but when my boss started selling those mini computers to clients, well, they didn't exactly need us any more. We were what was called back then a "computer service bureau". We processed different companies' billings, accounts payables/receivables, did their inventories, etc - all for them cuz they didn't have the technology to do it themselves. We had a "computer room" which was full of those HUGE computers that you had to feed punch cards into to read the data. We also used magnetic tape which had information on them - and I even used a small device that processed data right onto a cassette tape (which I thought was pretty cool at the time). Well, I guess everyone knows where this all led to - first the Apple PC (I think it was) - what a huge breakthrough, people could actually buy their very own computers to have in their homes. What a concept. And look where we have gotten to now --- Surfing the WEB on a teeny little PHONE! Who would've thunk it???
I'm glad I was there "at the beginning", but hey, now I'm lost in this big old world of technology. And I am just at that point where I don't WANT to learn any more. I guess ignorance can be bliss?
Well, I'm just ranting today. Maybe I really am sicker than I thought, huh? Good thing I took the day off work!
